MIMOS In Digital Manufacturing

MIMOS is Malaysia’s national applied research and development (R&D) centre focussing on generating technology solutions that enable the Government and industry to deliver better value.

As Malaysia prepares to embrace the new industrial revolution, MIMOS offers technological capabilities, resources and services for the manufacturing as well as electrical and electronics (E&E) sector under its overarching Industry 4.0 technology focus areas.

MIMOS’ Manufacturing Innovation Centre includes an advanced shared service facilities that offer services in smart manufacturing enablers such as next-generation materials, integrated circuit design, additive manufacturing, microelectronics and semiconductors.

The centre also houses a product engineering laboratory that provides services in industrial design, digital modelling, reliability engineering and user experience consultation.

Backed by strong R&D capabilities in data science, artificial intelligence, information security, wireless smart sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) applications, MIMOS can equip startups as well as multinational corporations with cost-efficient advanced technologies to boost their efficiency and productivity, improve performance and deliver better outcomes.

SMISP is an integrated operational technology and information technology shared services platform with facilities that manage smart devices and sensors in a simple and standardised manner. The infrastructure provides cloud-based tools for creating smart solutions, services and applications.

Applied Solutions

SMISP is an integrated smart services platform that allows the development of solutions and services based on users’ needs and preferences. Currently, applied solutions are available for adoption by manufacturing plants in four critical areas:

  • Energy Monitoring
  • Environmental Monitoring
  • Operation Monitoring
  • Material Tracking and Production Tracking.

Value

Companies that use Industry 4.0 technologies are more competitive because they produce at lower costs and meet customer needs with more flexibility.

SMISP facilitates the adoption of Industry 4.0 core technologies by SME-based manufacturing through cost-effective, flexible and reliable services.

Connectivity and information exchange among all components are key to smart manufacturing.

SMISP connects siloed data, consolidate ideas and intelligence, connect smart machines and factories; and empower workers to experience connected automation, which will lead to greater efficiency and productivity.

Ultimately, SMISP will help reduce Malaysian SME’s barrier to entry to digitisation and increase their global competitiveness.

Features

Impact

Typical Features of Intelligent Solution

  • Interactive dashboard – A data management tool that tracks, analyses, monitors and visually displays key sensor data. It allows users to interact with the data and in turn enabling them to make well- informed, data-driven decisions.
  • Real-time data updates – Real-time data updates enable users to monitor activities as they happen from anywhere regardless of user’s geographical location.
  • Real-time notifications – Real-time notifications enable users to take immediate action in the event of a critical situation.
  • MIMOS technology compatibility – Compatible with other MIMOS technologies such as Unified Authentication Platform (Mi-UAP) to provide a broad range of services and capabilities.
  1. Cost saving – With energy planning and optimisation, companies can save up to 15% on electricity bill
  2. Reduced wastage – Improved production control with optimum use of raw material; efficient production scheduling and intelligent progress tracking
  3. Reduced production loss – Real time tracking and monitoring of equipment improves production performance
  4. Enhanced quality control – In food production, digital maintenance of temperature control for processing room results in higher quality products
  5. More efficient production cycle – Big Data Analytics reduce time taken for assembling, testing, verification and manufacturing movement
  6. More accurate machine troubleshooting – Augmented Reality provides real-time visibility of machine problems for debugging and maintenance.

Future Plan

SMISP shall be expanded to be able to control machines such as freezers and chillers to increase output yield and maximise power consumption usage.

The system shall be smart in using the data analytical results to control devices remotely to increase production efficiency. Advanced Ambient Intelligence (AAI) capabilities will be integrated into SMISP to bring intelligence to indoor environments and makes them sensitive to human and machine; their behaviours, status and needs, in order to deliver the right services for achieving business objectives.

The key element of AAI is context discovery, which can be realised by determining the exact location and surrounding condition of the objects of interest. To understand future needs and incorporate new capabilities and solutions, MIMOS invites further collaborations with academia and industry, particularly SMEs.

Technical Info

SMISP comprises five Industry 4.0 enabling technologies, which are used to develop smart manufacturing solutions to be implemented at the industry partners’ factories. Web-based dashboards are integrated across the platform for human-machine interface, maintenance, management and operation.

CORE TECHNOLOGIES

  1. Cloud Computing – infrastructure-as-a-service
  2. Big Data Analytics – data management and analysis
  3. Augmented Reality – Augmented Reality toolkits
  4. Internet of Things – IoT middleware
  5. System Integration – smart manufacturing integration services.

PLATFORM ARCHITECTURE

To enable the development of smart services and applications; and hosting them on the cloud, SMISP features an application-flow engine that executes the application logic; and various processes that provide services; such as database access, sensor data capture and storage, as well as e-mail and mobile notifications. A web-based dashboard is used to view information collected from the connected smart devices. Currently, the JSON/ REST and the MQTT connector are used as device connectors.
