There is a need to empower Malaysian ICT companies to move up the value chain, with research support and subsequent relevant technology platforms. MIMOS’ various Centres of Excellence (CoE) were established to promote and license innovative MIMOS technologies or Intellectual Properties (IPs) to qualified ICT companies, to give them an edge towards repositioning them in the global markets.
MIMOS’ University CoEs are physical labs or offices located at universities. It is intended that all R&D labs resident within local universities be transformed into CoEs that will support the country’s key economic corridors, which include the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC), Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), East Coast Economic Region (ECER) and Johor’s Iskandar Malaysia.
CoEs for various industries have also been set up in collaboration with multinational companies (MNC), to increase Malaysia’s ICT industry competitiveness. By learning from the MNC’s experience and expertise, local ICT companies can run at a level playing field with their foreign counterparts. At the same time, the CoEs are a testbed for all relevant parties to conduct their application development, experiments and interoperability tests.
