Official Visit Of The Prime Minister To Mimos Berhad

PUTRAJAYA, 21 November 2023 – The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) welcomed Malaysia’s Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for an official visit to MIMOS Berhad today.

This official visit aims to give the Prime Minister a first-hand look at MIMOS’ extensive potential as the National Applied Research and Development (R&D) Centre under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in aiding the government’s vision for a cutting-edge, globally competitive Malaysia under MADANI Malaysia.

YB Chang Lih Kang, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), led the successful visit, attended by YB Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Bin Ismail, the Home Affairs Minister, YB Dr Zaliha Binti Mustafa, the Health Minister, YB Ahmad Fahmi Bin Mohamed Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister, YBhg. Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, the Secretary General of Treasury, Ministry of Finance, and YM Tengku Datuk Dr Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen, the founder of MIMOS and President of the Science Academy of Malaysia (ASM), who also serves as Malaysia’s Adviser on Science, Technology, and Innovation.

During his address to MIMOS Management and staff, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted his long-standing relationship with MIMOS. He remembers chairing meetings of the National Information Technology Council (NITC) throughout the 90s as the Deputy Chairman of NITC of which MIMOS was the secretariat. He emphasised that MIMOS’ research and collaboration align with the goals outlined in the ‘MALAYSIA MADANI’ economic framework, Digital Economy, the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). YAB Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed confidence in MIMOS’ focus on Semiconductors, Advanced Electronics & Embedded Systems, and other Strategic ICT technology especially those related to Smart Nation by ensuring the country’s technology security and sovereignty which would accelerate Malaysia’s tech industry progress. He also lauded MIMOS’ cutting-edge facilities for supporting industry players, and researchers and fostering future talents in technology. YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim also announced the appointment of MIMOS Berhad to spearhead the National ID project with an initial allocation estimated at RM80 million.

MOSTI, as the overseeing Ministry for MIMOS Berhad, has entrusted it with several key mandates. These include implementing the E&E Roadmap: Technology Development 2021-2030 to enhance the local E&E industry’s value, spearheading the National Blockchain Roadmap to fortify Malaysia’s role in Blockchain technology, and driving the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development Plan for strategic growth and competitiveness. YB Chang Lih Kang said, “I would like to thank MIMOS for your continuous dedication and efforts in supporting MOSTI to create a platform to shape the future of Malaysia’s technology landscape. Several technology solutions currently being developed by MIMOS include Sentiment Analysis, Blockchain, Semiconductor, and Renewable Energy. MIMOS also provides Technology Advisory and Advocacy. I believe MIMOS can play a greater role as a catalyst for the Malaysian Technology industry through the successful deliveries of all its mandates.”
