Propelling Development of the E&E Industry

On 17 May 2023, MIMOS President and CEO Dr Iskandar Samad and MIMOS Senior Researcher Ir Dr Nordin Ramli hosted a delegation from MITI, led by Muhammad Zulhilmi Ahmad, Director of the Industry Development Division, to discuss strategies to strengthen MIMOS’ role in driving the development of the National E&E Industry.

Meeting and discussion with MITI

As the National Applied R&D Centre under MOSTI, and in line with the Ministry’s E&E Roadmap: Technology Development 2021 – 2030, MIMOS plays a significant role in driving new capabilities in the upstream sector of the country’s semiconductor industry while continuing to advance capabilities in the downstream sector.

MIMOS is also the catalyst to strengthen R&D and technology development to change Malaysia’s status into a technology-producing country.

In addition, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has also developed the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 to drive industrial development.

Answering the call from the Government to strengthen inter-Ministries’ and agencies’ working relationships pursuing a common goal, MIMOS has initiated the meeting with MITI to support each other in synergising the efforts to drive the industry development and provide support for the growth in the E&E sector.

MIMOS would play a significant part in stimulating and focusing R&D activities in specific fields, especially the semiconductor field, and assist in coordinating policies related to downstream applied industries prioritising local technology.

Whereas MITI could assist in setting the country’s FDI strategy and explore G2G linkages for synergy of FDI investment with technological aspirations, as well as coordinate government investment policy to support technology investment in the most strategic areas.

The discussion with MITI was a success as both parties agreed to support each other to drive industry development in the E&E sector and to update each other when there is a need for input from both parties.
