Raising awareness on reliability

Reliability is, by definition, understanding the ability of a system and component to perform its required function under stated conditions for a specified period of time.  Reliability engineering is a sub-discipline within systems engineering that emphasises dependability in the lifecycle management of a product. The discipline is applied cradle-to-grave to many products, systems, processes and equipment. This covers design and development, modelling and prediction, testing, and availability and maintainability.

The MIMOS Reliability Lab recently organised a seminar in raising awareness and interest on reliability engineering and management.  Believed to be the first seminar of its kind in this country, the ‘Reliability: Trends, Applications and Challenges in Malaysia’ seminar was aimed at providing the understanding on the concept, applications and trends in reliability, which are applied by various sectors including institutions of higher learning, semiconductors, oil and gas, manufacturers of electronic devices, and the military in Malaysia.  The seminar was organised in collaboration with Horizon3 Sdn Bhd, an established reliability engineering system integration and solution provider.

Reliability2

Speakers comprised reliability practitioners and experts from the industry and universities such as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Petroliam Nasional (Petronas), Science and Technology Research in Defense (STRIDE) as well as senior engineers from MIMOS Appearance and Design Modeling Team.

Reliability3

Industry representatives from AdvanSoft, SKF Malaysia, STRIDE, and Hornbill Engineering shared their latest product innovation during the networking session at the exhibition booth, with focus on reliability tools and system integration.

Reliability4

Participants included students and academics from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, SIRIM-QAS, Telekom R&D, Panasonic, Petronas Carigali, Finisar and Daikin R&D.

Career opportunities for a reliability engineer are widely available in various industries such as semiconductor, aerospace, oil and gas, and power plant; in global and local companies.
