Malaysia’s Leap in Global Innovation, A New Chapter for a Brighter Future

Malaysia’s innovation landscape has seen a significant leap, with Kuala Lumpur being recognised as a Top 100 Global Innovation Cluster, having climbed from 93rd place in 2024 to 86th in 2025 in the Global Innovation Index (GII). This achievement is largely attributed to the relentless efforts of MIMOS Berhad and its strategic partners in academia and industry. The GII 2025 report highlighted Malaysia’s success based on three key pillars.

The GII’s comprehensive methodology evaluated Malaysia’s success across three key pillars: international patent applications, scientific publications, and venture capital investment. MIMOS’ contributions are particularly evident in these areas: it has played a crucial role in increasing the number of international patent applications (under PCT-WIPO), a measure of the country’s technological and intellectual output. Furthermore, its research initiatives have contributed to the quality and quantity of scientific and scholarly publications from Malaysian institutions. Finally, MIMOS has been instrumental in creating a conducive environment for attracting venture capital, serving as a new and significant indicator of investor confidence in Malaysia’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

This progress signifies Malaysia’s transition from a technology consumer to a creator, promising thousands of new job opportunities, improved quality of life through advanced products and services, and a boost to national confidence.

Malaysia’s rise in the ranking signalled a new narrative for the nation, where we are no longer just consumers of technology, but creators and drivers of an innovation-based economy. It will also translate into tangible benefits for the public, including creating thousands of new, high-quality jobs, developing products and services that improve daily life, and boosting national pride and confidence. As the government continues to review the 12th Malaysia Plan, this milestone provides a positive indicator that the nation’s investments in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) are on the right track. This is not the end of MIMOS’ journey, but a powerful beginning towards a more prosperous and sustainable future for all Malaysians.
