Job Purpose

The Manager is responsible for leading an IP executive team in IP Department that executes protection and maintenance of company’s intellectual properties (IP) according to regulations, standard process & company’s established SOPs. The manager also executes assigned roles, representation or alternate to department HOD in corporate programs participation or committee membership as when required.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Supervisory roles to IP executive team in the department, including

  1. Distribution of work related to activities along IP value chain for all types of IP, from prior arts analysis to specification drafting for official filings/registrations (local and international), responding to office action/patent examination results, etc. to meet related corporate and department KPI.
  2. Appointment and annual review of contracted IP agents.
  3. Other activities which require team efforts from time to time.

2. Conduct IP/technology portfolio analysis as strategic input for R&D team in project planning & IP/technology positioning.

3. Lead Secretariat (IPMD) to the IP Committee (IPC) or other established committee on IP.

4. As part of IP team,

  1. Personally processing IP disclosure for protection/filing to national/foreign IP offices to deliver corporate & department KPI.
  2. Manage office actions of patent examinations to obtain the IP rights; Preparing technical response to Substantive Examination Adverse Reports and follow through the results & certifications.
  3. Assist inventors to assess patentability of new inventions by reviewing related disclosures, and conducting IP mining.
  4. Assist project such as IP due diligence on the technology being developed and IP risk assessment in any stage of project implementation as requested/required.

5. Consolidate multi-factor IP related KPIs from R&D&C units and status monitoring (e.g. IP filings & grants, research publications, commercialized IPs) for monitoring & reporting

6. Lead on IP training/awareness activities

  1. Conduct IP training & awareness session to new employee as well as high level training to researchers as per CHR or department activities.
  2. Conduct IP training to external as part of company training program by CHR when any or as per department activities.

7. Assist department HOD in providing related info./analysed data e.g. for

  1. reviewing or assessing relevancy of the company’s IP for maintenance purposes
  2. preparing yearly IP budget, monitoring expenditure status
  3. reviewing and updating department processes & SOPs when required
  4. other departmental matters e.g. IP KPI reporting to stakeholders, internal and external audit exercise, IPMD input or representation, etc. as when required.

8. Execute assigned roles, representation or as alternate to department HOD in corporate programs participation or membership of working committee as when required.

9. Monitor new or changes on laws and regulations that are affecting company’s intellectual property operations and propose updates of the department relevant SOPs accordingly.

Qualification

  • Possess Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Health Sciences or Life Sciences (Biotechnology / relevant field), Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. or any other related academic background.

Professional Qualification

  • Preferably holds a professional qualification as a Malaysian Patent Agent.
  • Certification as a Trainer is an added advantage.

Work Experience

  • At least 5 years experience in IP field and has obtained professional skill and knowledge on IP rights & protection (i.e.prior art search, drafting and prosecution), according to related processes, Acts & Regulations.
  • Experienced in communicating and educating diverse groups on IP.
