Renewable Energy and Power Electronics for a Sustainable Future

MIMOS-IEEE Malaysia Technology Update

On 9 November 2023, MIMOS invited Prof. Dr Saad Mekhilef, a Distinguished Professor at the School of Science, Computing, and Engineering Technologies at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia to share his expertise on renewable energy and power electronics.

Prof. Dr Saad Mekhilef, a fellow of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), is also the Founder of the Power Electronics and Renewable Energy Research Laboratory (PEARL) at Universiti Malaya.

His two-session workshop covered the topics of ‘Advancements In Renewable Energy Integration and Power Electronics for A Sustainable Future’ for the first session and ‘Dealing with Reviewer’s Comments’ for the second session. It was attended by MIMOSians and external guests of close to 50 people.

Power Electronics to Revolutionise Renewable Energy Generation

Held at MIMOS’ Auditorium, the talk covered the critical role of power electronics in facilitating the generation of renewable energy. Prof. Dr Saad Mekhilef emphasised that the targeted use of renewable energy stands at 51% while the current utilisation remains at 21%. He further highlighted silicon-based semiconductors’ pivotal role in power electronics production, underscoring their significant influence on the overall performance of renewable energy systems.

To expedite the application of renewable energy, Prof. Dr Saad Mekhilef proposed the in-progress construction of the largest low-wind wind turbine standing at 236 meters in diameter operating exclusively on power electronics.

Before ending the event, a brief workshop session was held where Prof. Dr Saad Mekhilef guided participants in navigating through reviewers’ comments when writing academic publications. Attendees were able to gain valuable insights into effective strategies to enhance their quality of writing and manoeuvre through reviewer feedback.

As the national technology and solutions provider, MIMOS strives to accommodate its staff and key players with current technological breakthroughs to advance their skills to their utmost potential. Informative workshops such as this are one of the few examples of MIMOS’ efforts to progress in the technological field and to foster innovation and collaboration among professionals in the industry.
