Assistant Manager, Product Portfolio

Job Purpose

The Assistant Manager, Product Portfolio is responsible for driving the development, management, and commercialisation of technology-based products and solutions within the organisation. This role bridges technical innovation and market execution by translating R&D outputs into viable commercial offerings, managing product lifecycle strategies, and ensuring alignment with business objectives and market needs. The incumbent works cross-functionally with R&D, business development, marketing, and external stakeholders to evaluate, position, and launch products that create sustainable value.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Drive end-to-end technology commercialisation from idea to launch.
• Assess new technologies/products for commercial potential.
• Manage and align the product portfolio roadmap.
• Conduct market & competitor analysis.
• Work with R&D to convert technology into market-ready products.
• Define go-to-market strategies with business and marketing teams.
• Track product performance (revenue, usage, feedback).
• Develop business cases and investment proposals.
• Manage stakeholders, both internal and external.
• Manage the product lifecycle (enhance, scale, retire).

Accountability

• Successful commercialisation of the product portfolio, achieving defined revenue and adoption targets.
• Quality and timeliness of product roadmap delivery and execution.
• Accuracy and effectiveness of market and financial analyses supporting decision-making.
• Alignment of product offerings with customer needs and organisational strategy.
• Achievement of KPIs related to product performance, innovation pipeline, and ROI.
• Strong collaboration across functions to ensure seamless product development.

Qualification

• Possess Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Information Technology, or Marketing/Business.

Professional Qualification

• Postgraduate qualification (e.g. MBA, MSc in Technology Management or Innovation), or certification in Project Management (PMP/PRINCE2) or Product Management, is an advantage.

Work Experience

• Minimum of 5–10 years in R&D, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Oil & Gas, or Finance/Admin.

Technical Skills

• Product portfolio and lifecycle management.
• Technology assessment and commercial viability analysis.
• Market research, competitive intelligence, and data analysis.
• Financial modelling and business case development.
• Knowledge of innovation frameworks and commercialisation processes.
• Familiarity with digital technologies, platforms, or emerging tech trends (e.g. AI, IoT, cloud).

Soft Skills

• Strategic thinking and business acumen.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• Problem-solving and analytical thinking.
• Stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration.
• Adaptability and ability to manage ambiguity in innovation environments.
• Project management and time prioritisation.

Additional Preferences

• Postgraduate qualification (e.g. MBA, MSc in Technology Management or Innovation) is an advantage.
• Experience in technology transfer offices, incubators, or startup ecosystems is preferred.
• Exposure to IP management, licensing, or partnerships is a plus.
• Certification in Project Management (e.g. PMP, PRINCE2) or Product Management is advantageous.
• Familiarity with agile methodologies and innovation frameworks (e.g. Design Thinking, Lean Startup).
